Chennai: Team India asserted their dominance on Day 1 of the Women's Test match against South Africa, amassing a staggering 525/4, the highest score ever recorded in a day's play in Women's Tests.

Opting to bat first, openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma set the tone with a record-breaking opening stand of 292 runs.

Mandhana was in sublime touch, scoring a fluent 149 before edging one to the keeper. Her partner, Shafali Verma, continued her onslaught, converting her century into a monumental 205. Her innings, filled with powerful strokes, was cut short due to a mix-up with Jemimah Rodrigues.

Youngster Satheesh Shubha fell cheaply, contributing only 15 runs. Rodrigues added a crucial 55, demonstrating patience and skill before skying a slog that was caught by Nadine de Klerk. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (42*) and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh (43*) remained unbeaten, steering India to a commanding position.

South African bowlers, toiling in the hot and humid conditions of Chennai, struggled to make breakthroughs. Delmi Tucker was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while de Klerk claimed one.

India's declaration decision will be keenly awaited on Day 2, as they look to capitalize on their formidable start.
