In a significant development for South African cricket, Proteas wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has decided to opt out of his Cricket South Africa (CSA) central contract with immediate effect.
The decision, made with mutual consent following discussions with CSA, will allow Shamsi to participate in T20 franchise leagues worldwide, even when they overlap with South Africa's international commitments.
While stepping away from the central contract, Shamsi remains an integral part of South Africa's white-ball plans. CSA has affirmed that the 34-year-old will continue to be considered for selection in major ICC events, provided he maintains form and fitness.
"Shamo is a key member of our white-ball squads, and while we respect his decision, we are pleased that he remains committed to representing South Africa," commented Enoch Nkwe, CSA's Director of Cricket.
"We appreciate his honesty and openness, which aligns with the values we uphold in South African cricket."
Shamsi will continue to represent his domestic side, the Titans, while balancing his international duties. In his official statement, the left-arm wrist spinner explained that opting out of the central contract would provide him with greater career flexibility, while still honoring his commitments to the Proteas and the Titans.
"I have decided to opt out of my central contract in order to be more flexible during the domestic season, allowing me to explore all opportunities available and look after my family in the best way possible," said Shamsi. "This will not impact my ability or motivation to play for the Proteas in any way. It has always been my dream to bring the World Cup home to South Africa, and no franchise league will ever be more important than playing for my country."
Shamsi expressed gratitude to CSA's Enoch Nkwe, Proteas head coach Rob Walter, and Titans CEO Dr Jacques Faul for their support throughout the process, stating that their guidance was crucial in making his decision.
