England put on a dominant display on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's, scoring 358/7 in 88 overs.

The hosts, who were put in to bat after Sri Lanka won the toss, capitalized on their early advantage and built a solid foundation for the remainder of the match.

Dan Lawrence, batting out of his usual position, was the first to fall, caught by Pathum Nissanka off Lahiru Kumara in the sixth over. Skipper Ollie Pope followed suit soon after, dismissed by Asitha Fernando for just 1.

Ben Duckett provided a quickfire innings of 40 off 47 deliveries, but it was Joe Root who stole the show. The English star scored a magnificent 143 in 206 deliveries, including 18 fours. He formed crucial partnerships with Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson, adding 62 and 92 runs respectively for the fifth and seventh wickets.

Atkinson himself contributed a valuable knock, remaining unbeaten on 74 at the close of play. England's tail, weakened by the absence of Ben Stokes, was exposed, but Atkinson's aggressive batting helped them finish the day in a strong position.

The Sri Lankan pace attack was disciplined throughout the day, with Kumara, Milan Rathnayake, and Asitha Fernando each claiming two wickets. Prabath Jayasuriya, who struck in his first over, finished the day with 1/81.

Despite losing the toss, England find themselves in a commanding position. With the second new ball just eight overs old, the hosts will be looking to bat once and bat big, hoping to further extend their lead over Sri Lanka.
