The West Indies Women, sent in to bat after losing the toss,
never fully recovered from a poor start. Openers Hayley Matthews
(10) and Qiana Joseph (4) were dismissed inside the powerplay,
putting the team under pressure early on. Deandra Dottin, known
for her aggressive strokeplay, tried to counter-attack but was
soon dismissed for 13 by Marizanne Kapp.
Stafanie Taylor held the innings together with a resilient 44*,
but lacked support from the other end. Shemaine Campbelle (17)
showed brief promise before falling, and with wickets falling at
regular intervals, the West Indies struggled to build
partnerships. Late resistance from Zaida James (15*) alongside
Taylor allowed the West Indies to reach a respectable, though
underwhelming, total of 118/6.
The South African bowling attack, led by Nonkululeko Mlaba, was
relentless. Mlaba was the standout performer, taking 4 wickets
for 29 runs in her four overs, applying constant pressure on the
West Indies batters. Marizanne Kapp complemented Mlaba with an
exceptional spell, finishing with figures of 2/14, as the
Proteas restricted the Caribbean side to a below-par
total.
Chasing 119 for victory, South Africa's openers, captain
Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, set the tone with a positive
start. The West Indies bowlers struggled to create any
breakthroughs with the new ball, allowing the Proteas to cruise
to 43/0 at the end of the powerplay.
Wolvaardt and Brits maintained full control of the chase,
keeping the required run rate in check while regularly finding
the boundary. Both batters brought up their half-centuries, with
Wolvaardt finishing unbeaten on 59 and Brits on 57, as the duo
completed a flawless chase in just 17.5 overs, sealing a
10-wicket win for South Africa.
This victory marks a strong start to the tournament for South
Africa Women, who showcased their all-round strength with a
dominant performance. Their bowlers were on point, and the
opening partnership between Wolvaardt and Brits ensured a
comfortable chase. As one of the top contenders, the Proteas
will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming
matches.
For the West Indies Women, the defeat exposes areas that need
improvement, particularly in their batting depth and bowling
effectiveness. They will need to regroup quickly if they hope to
remain competitive in the tournament.
