India's announcement of a 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh has brought two new faces into the limelight – Asha Sobhana and Sajana Sajeevan. These young talents have earned their maiden call-ups on the back of stellar performances in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL), showcasing their prowess and potential on the cricketing stage.
Asha Sobhana's inclusion in the squad marks a historic moment as she becomes the first Indian cricketer to claim a five-wicket haul in WPL, delivering outstanding figures of 5/22 against UP Warriorz. Her consistent performances throughout the league, bagging 12 wickets in 10 matches, placed her as the joint second-highest wicket-taker alongside Australia's Sophie Molineux.
On the other hand, Sajana Sajeevan made a thunderous entry into the cricketing scene during her debut match in WPL 2024. Playing for Mumbai Indians, she sealed victory with a six off the final ball against Delhi Capitals, capturing attention with her fearless batting style. Sajeevan's strike rate of 158.18 and impactful contributions lower down the order made her a standout performer in the tournament.
The Indian squad, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy, reflects a blend of experience and emerging talent.
