The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has named a 15-man squad to face South Africa in a crucial T20 International (T20I) series leading up to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The highly anticipated series begins on Thursday, May 23rd at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Brandon King Takes the Helm
In the absence of regular captain Rovman Powell, who remains involved in the Indian Premier League, Brandon King will lead the West Indies as interim captain. Roston Chase, who successfully led the West Indies A-Team to a recent T20 series win in Nepal, will serve as interim vice-captain.
Squad Focused on World Cup Preparation
The squad selection prioritizes players who can utilize these matches to refine their skills and maximize readiness for the World Cup, regardless of their final selection status. This series provides valuable pre-tournament experience, particularly for those returning from the IPL.
Head Coach Daren Sammy on Building Momentum
"We haven't played together as a team since the Australia series," acknowledged Head Coach Daren Sammy, "but the recent high-intensity training camp was productive. This series allows us to integrate returning IPL players and build momentum as a group heading into the World Cup."
Alzarri Joseph and Sherfane Rutherford will be added to the squad if their respective franchises don’t reach the Indian Premier League (IPL) Final. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran are both rested for the series and will join the squad in Trinidad on Monday, 27 May.
