Day 2 of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka at Old Trafford was a tale of two halves, with rain washing out the entire morning session and the afternoon offering a thrilling battle under overcast skies.

When play finally resumed, England faced early blows as Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando capitalized on the conditions, removing Ben Duckett (18) and captain Ollie Pope (6) in quick succession.

Daniel Lawrence looked promising but fell for 30, leaving England wobbling. Joe Root and Harry Brook then steadied the ship with a quick-fire 58-run partnership, though Root’s departure for 42 to Fernando halted England’s momentum. Brook continued his aggressive approach, racing to a half-century off just 59 balls before falling to a peach from Prabath Jayasuriya.

Chris Woakes also succumbed to Jayasuriya, but Jamie Smith stood resilient at the other end, crafting a courageous 72* to push England to a slim 23-run lead by stumps. With three wickets in hand, England will look to build on this lead when play resumes on Day 3 at 2:30 PM IST (10:00 AM Local Time). The match remains finely poised, with both sides eager to seize control.
