South Africa and West Indies Play Out a Draw in Rain-Affected First Test

The first Test between South Africa and West Indies ended in a thrilling draw at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad. Despite frequent rain interruptions, both teams battled hard, setting up a potential result on the final day.

South Africa, after winning the toss, opted to bat but were restricted to 45/1 on Day 1 due to rain. On Day 2, skipper Temba Bavuma (86) and Tony de Zorzi (86) anchored South Africa to 357, with Jomel Warrican taking 4/69.

West Indies responded with 233, with Keshav Maharaj (4/76) leading South Africa’s bowling effort. Keacy Carty (42) top-scored for the hosts, while Warrican’s quick 35* helped narrow the deficit.

South Africa’s second innings was brisk, with Tristian Stubbs’ 68 off 50 balls propelling them to declare at 173/3, setting a target of 298.

West Indies, chasing in challenging conditions, lost skipper Kraigg Brathwaite early. Alick Athanaze’s valiant 92 and Jason Holder’s unbeaten 31 guided them to 200/5 before stumps were called, securing a draw.

The series remains open, with the second and final Test scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Providence Stadium, Guyana. Both teams will look to claim the series in what promises to be an exciting contest.
