Stumps on Day 3 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Colombo saw the visitors struggling at 199/5, still trailing by 315 runs after being asked to follow-on by Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva. Bad light forced an early halt to the day, with the umpires calling off play during the final session.

New Zealand's first innings collapse was dramatic, as they were bowled out for just 88 runs in the morning session, marking their lowest-ever total in a Test match in Sri Lanka. Prabath Jayasuriya starred with the ball, claiming 6/42—his ninth five-wicket haul in Test cricket—while debutant Nishan Peiris impressed with three wickets.

Facing a 514-run deficit, New Zealand had no choice but to bat again under immense pressure. Their second innings started with a more positive approach, as the Kiwi batsmen looked to unsettle the Sri Lankan spinners. However, after Tom Latham’s dismissal just before lunch, Kane Williamson and Devon Conway formed a stabilizing partnership, only to give away their wickets with aggressive shots, leaving New Zealand precariously placed.

At 199/5, Sri Lanka are now five wickets away from a 2-0 series win. With overcast conditions interrupting play today, the match looks set to conclude on Day 4, with an early start scheduled for 9:45 AM IST to make up for lost time.

Brief Scores:
New Zealand - 88 & 199/5 (follow-on, Kane Williamson 53, Devon Conway 44; Sri Lanka) trail by 315 runs.
