Pakistan cricket is set for another leadership change, with star batter Babar Azam announcing his resignation from the captaincy of the national team’s limited-overs sides. The 29-year-old made the announcement via social media, citing a desire to focus on his batting and reduce the workload that comes with captaincy.

Babar's decision follows a turbulent period for Pakistan cricket. He was initially removed from the role after the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, in March 2024, after just three months, Babar was reappointed as captain. His second stint, however, was marred by Pakistan's early exit from the T20 World Cup, where a shock defeat to the USA and a high-profile loss to arch-rivals India were significant setbacks.

Taking to 'X' (formerly Twitter), Babar shared his thoughts on stepping down.

“It’s been an honour to lead this team, but it’s time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it’s added a significant workload. I want to prioritise my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family,” Babar wrote.

He also acknowledged the support of his fans, saying, "Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me. I'm proud of what we've achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player.”

Babar’s recent run with the bat has not been up to his usual high standards, which likely played a role in his decision. Pakistan’s morale has also taken a hit, with recent struggles on the field, including a historic Test defeat to Bangladesh.

Pakistan cricket now faces the task of finding a new white-ball captain. Shaheen Afridi, who had briefly taken over T20I captaincy after Babar’s first removal, was also replaced, raising questions about the team’s leadership moving forward. With Pakistan’s upcoming tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will need to act swiftly in appointing a new captain to lead the side.

As for Babar, the nation’s batting talisman will now focus entirely on his performance as a player, looking to regain his form and continue being a key figure for Pakistan cricket.
