New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has stepped down as captain of the BLACKCAPS Test team, with Tom Latham confirmed as his successor.

Latham, who has previously captained the side on nine occasions, will now take up the role full-time, starting with the upcoming Test series in India.

Southee, 35, has been a pivotal figure for New Zealand cricket, playing 102 Tests since his debut in 2008 and claiming 382 wickets, second only to the legendary Sir Richard Hadlee. He took over as Test captain from Kane Williamson in December 2022, leading the team in 14 Tests, with a record of 6 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws. Despite his success, Southee believes stepping down is in the best interests of the team.

“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format that’s so special to me has been an absolute honour and a privilege,”

said Southee. “I’ve always put the team first throughout my career, and I believe this decision is best for the team moving forward. I’ll now focus on my on-field performances, continuing to take wickets and help New Zealand win Test matches.”

Southee expressed his support for Latham and the younger players in the team, emphasizing his role as a mentor.

"I wish Tom all the best in the role, and he knows I’ll be there to support him, as he has done for me."

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead lauded Southee’s leadership and his humility in stepping down.

“Tim’s been a fantastic player and a great leader, held in high regard by the team. It’s not easy to give up something you love, but Tim’s made this decision with the team’s best interests at heart.”

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO Scott Weenink echoed these sentiments, praising Southee’s selflessness.

“It’s a measure of the man that he continues to put the team first. To me, that’s the sign of a true leader in every sense of the word.”

Southee’s contributions extend beyond his leadership, having nurtured young seamers like Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears, who join a talented bowling group that includes Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson.

As the BLACKCAPS prepare for their next challenge in India, Latham will take charge of a 15-strong squad, with Southee continuing to play a vital role as a senior player.
