Uncapped fast-bowling allrounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe is set for his ODI debut as Sri Lanka named their 16-man squad for the upcoming three-match series against West Indies. Wickramasinghe replaces Chamika Karunaratne, who has been left out of the squad, signaling a shift in the team’s selection strategy under the new regime.
Karunaratne, who last featured for Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup, has struggled to retain his spot in the side despite being included in several squads since then. His exclusion from the squad confirms his fall out of favor, with Wickramasinghe’s rise taking center stage after the latter impressed in the Lanka Premier League earlier this year. Wickramasinghe, who made his T20I debut in the first game of the recent series against West Indies, had to make way for more spin options on the increasingly spin-friendly surfaces but has now been given another opportunity in the ODI format.
In addition to Wickramasinghe, legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay has been recalled to the side, replacing offspinner Akila Dananjaya in the spin department. Vandersay will complement a strong spin attack led by Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, with Dunith Wellalage also offering spin options.
Mohamed Shiraz, who was a late addition to the squad against India as a replacement for the injured Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka, retains his place. Madushanka has recovered and returns to the side after missing the T20I series against West Indies, though Pathirana is notably absent from the squad despite playing all three T20Is. The pace attack will be rounded out by Asitha Fernando, adding depth to Sri Lanka’s bowling unit.
Sri Lanka’s batting lineup remains unchanged from their previous series, with skipper Charith Asalanka leading the side. Avishka Fernando, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Nishan Madushka form a strong batting core.
The three-match ODI series is set to begin on October 20 in Pallekele, with all matches to be played at the same venue. The series is expected to be a closely contested affair as both teams look to build momentum ahead of future international commitments.
