West Indies Announce T20I and ODI Squads for Sri Lanka Tour

West Indies T20I and ODI Squads Announced for Sri Lanka Tour / ICC

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially revealed the squads for the highly anticipated T20 International (T20I) and One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka, scheduled from October 10 to 27, 2024. The tour will consist of three T20Is and three ODIs, providing a crucial opportunity for both teams as they prepare for future international tournaments.

T20I Squad

The West Indies T20I squad will face Sri Lanka in the first leg of the series from October 13 to 17, 2024. After their dominant 3-0 series win against South Africa earlier this year, the West Indies have risen to fourth in the ICC rankings, establishing themselves as serious contenders in the format. However, key players like Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, and Shimron Hetmyer have opted out of the Sri Lanka tour for personal reasons, creating opportunities for emerging talents and returning players.

Rovman Powell will continue to lead the side, with Roston Chase serving as Vice-Captain. Coach Daren Sammy, who now oversees squad selection, emphasized the importance of using the series to evaluate players and experiment with team strategies.

“The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing. We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka,” Sammy stated.

Shai Hope will once again lead the West Indies in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which will run from October 20 to 27, 2024. Alzarri Joseph has been named Vice-Captain for the series, which will be pivotal as the team builds towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. One of the standout inclusions is Jewel Andrew, the young wicketkeeper-batsman from Antigua, who has impressed selectors with his recent performances.

Coach Sammy expressed excitement about the blend of experience and youth in the squad, highlighting the chance to provide emerging players like Andrew with valuable experience on the international stage.
