ISIS Threat Prompts Heightened Security for India-Pakistan T20 World Cup Match in New York

In response to an ominous threat issued by the Islamic State (ISIS) against the upcoming T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan, New York officials are ramping up security measures to ensure the safety of the event. The match is scheduled to take place at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County next month.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that she has directed the New York State Police to implement heightened security protocols. These measures include an increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance, and thorough screening processes to preempt any potential threats.

Bruce Blakeman, the head of Nassau County, emphasized the importance of being vigilant and proactive. “We make sure that we are on top of every situation that could potentially arise. To that end, we have taken many, many precautions,” he stated. “We take every threat seriously. There are the same procedures for every threat. We don’t minimize threats. We track down all of our leads.”

The threat emerged from a post on a British chat site, where ISIS shared an image of the cricket stadium at Eisenhower Park with drones flying over it, marked with the date “9/06/2024”, the day of the India-Pakistan match. A screenshot of this post was broadcast by NBC New York TV, prompting county leaders to request the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to designate Eisenhower Park as a no-fly zone for drones.

Despite the alarming post, New York officials have downplayed it as not a “credible threat.” However, they continue to monitor the situation closely and have committed to deploying significant resources to ensure the safety of all attendees.

Governor Hochul reassured the public, stating, “While there is no credible public safety threat at this time, we continue to monitor the situation closely.” The authorities remain vigilant, prioritizing the security and well-being of all participants and spectators.
