England asserted dominance on day one of the opening Test of the English summer, ending the day at 189/3, leading by 68 runs after bowling out West Indies for a paltry 121.

Captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl, with James Anderson opening for one last time. West Indies’ skipper Kraig Brathwaite and debutant Mikyle Louis survived the first hour before Gus Atkinson, also on debut, broke the 34-run stand, dismissing Brathwaite for six.

Atkinson continued his impressive spell, taking out Kirk McKenzie for one. Louis, who looked solid, fell to Stokes for 27, initiating a collapse. Atkinson wreaked havoc, taking 7/45 in his 12 overs, the third-best debut figures for England, as West Indies lost their last seven wickets for just 33 runs.

In response, England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett had a steady start. Duckett was dropped early but soon fell for three to Jayden Seales. Ollie Pope then joined Crawley, and the pair added a quick 50-run stand. Both survived close LBW calls and brought up their fifties, with Pope eventually falling to Holder for 57.

Crawley continued his strong innings until Seales cleaned him up with a sizzling yorker for 76. Joe Root and Harry Brook ensured no further damage, ending the day unbeaten on 15 and 29, respectively.
