Sri Lanka secured a strong position on day one of the second Test match against New Zealand, thanks to a stellar performance from Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews at the Galle International Stadium.

Chandimal's 113 and Mathews' unbeaten 78 guided Sri Lanka to 250-3 at stumps, leaving New Zealand with a daunting task ahead. The hosts dominated the proceedings, with Chandimal and Mathews sharing a crucial 124-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Kamindu Mendis continued his impressive run, scoring 54 to become the first Sri Lankan batter to score eight consecutive half-centuries since debut.

New Zealand's bowlers struggled to make an impact, with Tim Southee and Matt Henry going wicketless. The visitors' fielding woes continued, with several dropped catches and misfields.

Sri Lanka's strong batting display comes after their 63-run victory in the first Test. The hosts aim to seal the series, while New Zealand seeks a comeback.
