The countdown to the TATA Indian Premier League 2025 season has officially begun with the closure of the player retention window on October 31, 2024. All ten franchises have meticulously curated their core lineups, retaining a total of 46 players, with a combined investment of INR 558.5 crore. Retention Rules and Strategy

The 2025 season allows each franchise a total salary cap of INR 120 crore, designated for forming a 25-player squad. Franchises were permitted to retain up to six players—capped at five international players and two uncapped Indian players, with Right to Match (RTM) options. 


This retention round has witnessed varying strategies across franchises. Notably, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have each chosen full retentions, securing six players. Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have each retained five players, forming strong cores. On the other end, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings retained four, three, and two players respectively.

Key Financial Highlights

Punjab Kings stand out with the largest auction purse of INR 110.5 crore, providing them with flexibility and the opportunity to build a deep, competitive squad at the auction. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals, who spent the most among teams at INR 79 crore, have INR 41 crore remaining for the auction.
