A day of contrasting fortunes at Lord's saw England extend their lead to 256 runs at the close of play on day two. The hosts, resuming their first innings on 383/5, were bowled out for 427 with Asitha Fernando picking up a five-fer.
However, England's Gus Atkinson made history, becoming the first player to score a century and take a wicket in the same Test innings at Lord's.

Sri Lanka's batting woes continued, with their top order once again failing to deliver. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal provided some resistance, but the visitors were struggling at 87/6. Kamindu Mendis, who had a stellar average of 92 coming into the match, played a crucial knock of 74 to give Sri Lanka a fighting chance.

The English pace bowlers, led by Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson, shared wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 196. The visitors were able to draw first blood in the second innings, dismissing Dan Lawrence early on. England's Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope remained unbeaten at the close of play.
