Orla Prendergast Takes Over as Ireland Women's Captain After Gaby Lewis Withdraws Due to Injury

Ireland Women have faced another setback in their ongoing series against Sri Lanka, with Gaby Lewis being ruled out due to a quad strain. Lewis, who scored a century in the second T20I and stepped in as captain after Laura Delany’s injury, will miss the remainder of the series. This marks the second captaincy change for Ireland within a week.

Orla Prendergast, stepping into the captaincy role for the first time at the international level, becomes the 19th player to captain Ireland Women. Arlene Kelly has been named vice-captain, while Christina Coulter Reilly joins the squad as cover.

Head Coach Ed Joyce acknowledged the challenge posed by the absence of Lewis and Delany, who together bring over 350 caps of experience. However, he expressed confidence in Prendergast’s leadership abilities, noting her analytical cricket mind and prior experience leading at the club level. Despite the setbacks, Joyce believes in the squad's depth and talent.

Head coach ED Joyce said :

“After the high of a first-ever ODI win against the Sri Lankans, Gaby’s injury – off the back of Laura’s [Delany] injury – is another blow for this young squad. Apart from the on-field leadership they offer, Laura and Gaby have together amassed over 350 caps of experience, which is a lot to now be without.

“The more positive view, though, is that the hard work we have done in the last two years has allowed us to develop a greater depth of talent – it will stretch our resources, but I believe in the talent this squad has.

“Orla is new to captaincy at this level, but has led at club level before – she has an analytical cricket mind and game intelligence, so I have confidence in her to bring her wide-ranging skillset to this new role.”
