England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20 series against Australia due to a calf injury. Phil Salt will captain the side in his absence.

Buttler, 33, suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury that kept him out of The Hundred. His last appearance was in the T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India in Guyana on June 27.

The news comes as a blow to England, who are already facing challenges in their white-ball cricket. The team struggled at the 2024 50-over World Cup, exiting in the first round, and then lost in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.

The T20I series against Australia starts at The Utilita Bowl in Southampton on September 11, followed by matches in Cardiff on September 13 and at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on September 15. The ODIs will run from September 19-29.

Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up to the T20 squad, while Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI group as cover.

The T20 series will be an opportunity for Phil Salt to showcase his leadership skills and for other players to step up and fill the void left by Buttler's absence.
